I've been looking at the Cochetopa area, S.E. of Gunnison, for a while and would like to take a trip down there sometime to explore. There are a number of old mines, many expired claims, but very few active ones. According to the BLM map a lot of that area is open BLM land, so it should be OK to poke around.
Most of the streams in that area are dry by summer, but there could still be placer deposits there. Could also be mine dumps worth checking, especially with a metal detector. It could also turn out there's nothing worth pursuing, but it might still be a fun outing.
If anyone is interested, feel free to chime in.
